Hang on to your gardening shears because we recorded something different for you this week! We went off-script! Deviated from '“the recipe!” Broke the mold! Changed it up!
Instead of following our usual platform of flowers, veggies, and all the best dirt with a few rabbit holes, quotes, and updates thrown in for good measure, we had what we call a “good ol’ garden gossip.”
We chatted and reviewed some questions I wrote up in advance to keep the gossip conversation flowing.
Why? The answer to that and every other question about this podcast episode will be “Listen to find out.”
Now, how about some links to products, plants, and other pleasures we talked about? (Oh, my “other pleasures” sounds naughty but we promise… well, listen.)
We talked about growing sunflowers from seed. I’m growing seedlings of ‘Concert Bells’ sunflowers, an AAS winner, to plant around my vegetable garden, using the Burpee reusable seed starting trays, which Dee and I love. Dee mentioned she bought some ‘Prince Tut’ papyrus to plant in her pond.
We chatted about plant labels and keeping track of plant names, which reminded me of a recent blog post.
We also discussed wire vine, Muehlenbeckia sp. Who knew that it blooms?
Would you like some fashion advice? We provided some in this episode! I highly recommend Insect Shield socks for mowing and gardening. No more chigger bites around my ankles! Use discount code DEENASHRDR for 15% off. Plus, it helps Dee maintain her blog! I also love my Duluth Trading Co. overalls and just ordered two more!
We also conversed on vegetable gardening. Dee has a bigger veg garden this year, using many raised beds from Vego Garden. And I might have made a mistake in planning my garden. And Dee bought seeds for something she decided not to plant. Curious? You'll need to listen to this episode to find out what that something is that Dee isn’t going to plant and what possible mistake I could have made after decades of growing vegetables.
We wrapped things up by discussing the books we were reading. Dee just finished The Ghost Keeper by Natalie Morrill (Amazon link) and is starting in on What Cannot Be Said by C. S. Harris (Amazon link). I just finished The Scent of Water by Elizabeth Goudge (Amazon link), and I continue consuming Agatha Raisin mysteries by M. C. Beaton via audiobooks. I just finished Dishing the Dirt, and as soon as I schedule this newsletter, I’ll be listening to Pushing Up Daisies. (Numbers 26 and 27 of the series which has 33 books.) What cozy mystery series should I start listening to after I finish this one? I finished the Aunt Dimity series last summer; the next one isn’t coming out until next summer.
I could have included more links in this newsletter to things like ‘Rise Up Amberness’ roses, Teresa Byington’s RoseChat podcast, the Elizabeth Goudge Bookclub, the Well-Read Mom Book Club, the Indianapolis Hosta Society Garden Tour, or the latest Lost Lady of Garden Writing, Josephine von Miklos, but I think that’s enough for this today.
Do listen and let us know if you like this occasional change up or if should we never do this again.
