As I write this, it’s a warm and windy Monday, and all of the leaves are falling from my oak trees. We’re supposed to get rain tomorrow or Wednesday, and I’ll be so grateful if it comes. It’s high and dry in Carol’s garden too, and her lilac is blooming so it must be October 2024!
On this week’s episode, we’ll wrap up October with a pumpkin orange bow, and talk about trees, growing veggies in the winter, apples, and more.
Armadillos are such a nightmare in gardens. They dig huge holes everywhere. I think the last one is gone here. Let’s hope that’s it for fall. I’m now thinking about my garden’s bones, and I’m writing a blog post about it.
Our question of the week was whether sumacs are poisonous. Listen to the episode to hear our answer.
For our favorites, Carol’s were her autumn crocuses. Here’s her Instagram video. Mine are leaves that are changing color.
Our flower topic was about cemeteries and how many are arboretums. Grave Landscapes: The Nineteenth Century Cemetery Movement by James R. Cochran and Erica Danylchak (Amazon Link.) is one of the books in Carol’s library about this and other cemetery garden topics.
Then, for our veggie topic, we discussed harvesting in winter. Since neither one of us are very good at this, we referred everyone to Four-Season Harvest: Organic vegetables from your home garden all year long, by Eliot Coleman (1992) (Amazon Link.)
We didn’t have any new books to review so I volunteered to buy a couple of fall magazines. These two caught my eye: Better Homes and Gardens Special Publication Best Apple Recipes on eBay and Southern Living Best Fall Recipes. This launched me into a long and perhaps ridiculously complicated dissertation on apples. You may notice if you listen that I truly love apples. How do you feel about apples? Do you have any favorites?
This is the last week of our spooky dirt for October. Carol discussed the Chelsea Physic Garden and How the Victorian Fern Hunting Craze Led to Adventure, Romance, and Crime which reminded her of a book, Ferns, by Grace A. Woolson.
My rabbit hole was, you guessed it, apples! In fact, a New Apple Variety Needs a Name. Carol found another Lost Lady of Gardening Writing.
As always, it was an eclectic ride. Thanks for joining us and Happy Halloween!
