On this week’s episode, our three “main topics” were plants for the front of the flower border, a new book for garden record-keeping, and books by Anna Pavord. And then there was some dirt and a few rabbit holes.
But before we get into all of that, allow me to explain that the reason for this episode’s title, Cat Got Your Garden, is because Dee’s cat, Masha, decided to join us while we were recording, and there was no way to edit out the sounds she made as she hopped up on the back of Dee’s chair and made herself known.
Now you may be wondering why we didn’t just stop recording, shoo the cat out, and start again. Long-time listeners, you know that’s not how things go around here. I don’t want to say we are a “one-take wonder” but honestly, we are a one-take wonder. You get our honest-to-goodness conversations, slightly scripted, but most often not scripted, just like you were sitting there with us.
And we think that’s why you come back every week. You are our friends now. We are in this together, through cats and other things that go bump in the recording.
Thanks for understanding!
In our updates, Dee mentioned she had just recorded a new Instagram reel about some organic potting soil she can use that doesn’t contain mammal by-products. While she talked about bringing her garden back from its wildness, I remembered a blog post I wrote in 2010: The Wilderness Called, It Wants Your Garden Back.
Our flower topic was about plants for the front of the flower border. We named some of our favorites. We’d love to hear about some of your favorites, so leave a comment about plants you like to put in the front of your borders. We might end up with enough new suggestions for another episode.
For our vegetable topic, we discussed a new book we got review copies of: The Tiny Farm Planner: Recordkeeping, Seasonal To-Dos, and Resources for Manging Your Small-Scale Home Farm, by Jill Ragan, (Amazon), Author of The Tiny but Mighty Farm (Amazon).
This is definitely a book that anyone who likes to keep garden records will love for record-keeping or for new ideas on record-keeping.
On the bookshelf, we discussed books and articles written by Anna Pavord. Some of her books on our bookshelves include:
The Tulip: The Story of a Flower That has Made Men Mad. (Amazon link)
Bulb (Amazon link)
The Curious Gardener (Amazon Link)
The Naming of Names: The Search for Order in the World of Plants (Amazon Link)
Dee found our dirt, which is about taxonimists changing bird names. We went slightly off-topic (big surprise), wondering what the most popular hobbies in the United States are. I did a tiny bit of research…and let’s just say that birding and gardening weren’t even on the lists I found. The top hobbies on the lists I found were cooking/baking, then reading…
And speaking of reading, my rabbit hole was about a newly published book I just read,
Not Just a Homemaker: The Extraordinary Life of Sheila MacGregor, by Paulette Brooks (Amazon link).
There is so much more in this episode, such as how best to trap… well, I don’t want to give away everything, so just listen to it!
