Cat Got Your Garden?

Whether or not you have a cat, we think you’ll enjoy this week’s episode which is kind of about cats in the garden, but you know us, it’s also about a few other topics.
But before we get into the details, imagine me smacking my forehead as I think of the missed opportunity I had with this topic. Did you know that pansies are sometimes called “cat-faced” because some of their flower markings look like cat’s whiskers? Based on that fact alone, I could have enlightened everyone with more fun information about pansies and of course, violas.
Well, a mention in the newsletter and my little graphic will have to be good enough because the rest of the episode… well, let’s just say that wintry Sunday afternoons are the perfect time to curl up with a fun book about gardening or record a fun podcast episode about gardening.

On to veggies! Cats can most assuredly eat vegetables, and we found a Be Chewy article about vegetables cats can eat and, probably more importantly, vegetables they can’t or shouldn’t eat. Listen to find out what vegetable Dee’s cat Masha eats. Then go to Instagram to visit Mr. Milo the Chonk, one of our favorite cats on the Internet.
On the bookshelf, we decided to highlight Beverley Nichols’ gardening books because he also loved cats. If you don’t know who he is, you can start your cozy reading of his books with a compilation: Rhapsody in Green by Beverley Nichols, edited by Roy C. Dicks. (Amazon link). Nichols’ books and even the reprints are out of print, but I discovered one of his books is still in print: Beverley Nichols’ Cat Book!
For our dirt, we featured an article on cat-friendly houseplants from Gardeners World, which was timely because Dee just posted an IG reel about fixing up a houseplant that Masha had her way with!
Down in the rabbit holes, Dee stayed on topic with information about Basket of Flowers Farm. They are having a zinnia seed sale on December 9th at 10 am CST. Mark your calendars because these new varieties of zinnias sell out quickly.
I went down a rabbit hole on YouTube where I watched videos about caves and mounds in southern Indiana and life in Greenland, plus I discovered the
Salisbury Organist.
