On this week’s episode, Dee declares she is probably now frost-free so she’s barreling ahead with planting, while Carol is patiently waiting for warmer temps so she too can begin planting everything.
And that’s why the title of this episode starts with “every garden is unique.” Spring especially makes clear the differences in our gardens! So, what did we find in common to talk about? Well, even if every garden is unique, gardening is universal!
For our flower topic, we each came up with some new native plants to add to our gardens. I was inspired by A Northern Gardener’s Guide to Native Plants and Pollinators by Lorraine Johnson and Sheila Colla (Amazon Link), which I purchased after hearing Lorraine talk at a National Garden Bureau/GardenComm virtual author event. Check out NGB’s webinar page and scroll to the bottom to watch a recording. While you are there, register for the next gardening book event on November 14.
Listen to the episode to find out which flowers we chose.
For the vegetable topic, we shared a survey from Garden Center magazine in December about who’s growing vegetables these days and what they are growing. We expected a few of the results but found others surprising.
On the bookshelf, we featured Simple Country Living by Annette Thurmon of Azure Farm (Amazon link). We both received review copies. There’s a lot of good info in this book!
For our dirt, we talked about Botany, a new game from Dux Somnium Games. Good grief, we did go on a bit. If you want to see what it’s all about, check out this YouTube video of it being played.
And finally, down in our rabbit holes, as usual, I featured a lost lady of garden writing, and Dee had an interesting book recommendation. It just goes to show that we sometimes read books that aren’t about gardening, such as the Agatha Raisin mysteries I listen to when I clean.
Now we’d love to hear from you. Have a native plant recommendation? A book recommendation? A topic recommendation? Leave a comment and let us know!
Here’s the stuff at the end…
