As usual, we have an interesting and varied episode for you this week. We discussed many things like Happy Frog potting soils which I can no longer use because of bat guano, Epsoma garden products, the National Garden Bureau's Year of the Hosta and growing lettuce and peas.
Carol’s favorite thing this week is her crocus lawn which is just starting. I can’t grow crocus well for many reasons, but mostly because voles like them as a tasty snack. I am a bit jealous. I would love a crocus lawn, but you can’t grow everything. My extremely-tough succulents are my favorites this week.
For our flower topic, we discussed hostas. If you think hostas are wimpy, check out the one that Carol has growing in her back porch . We give some growing information too.
As for vegetables, we’ve decided it’s just about time to start lettuce seeds so here’s a vintage blog post about growing ‘Black-Seeded Simpson.’ I usually grow it every year because it reminds me of Grandma Nita, my garden mentor.
On our bookshelf is Mischievous Creatures: The Forgotten Sisters Who Transformed Early American Science by Catherine McNeur (Amazon.) Clever women they were! When Carol was talking about it, I was also thinking about The Language of Butterflies by Wendy Williams (Amazon) which featured the female entomologist, Maria Sibylla Merian.
We visited George Harrison's Topiary Garden for our dirt topic. Although we’re not really into topiary like George, you’ve got to admire his dedication.
Carol’s rabbit hole was another lost lady of garden writing, Dorothy Giles, author of The Little Kitchen Garden, and mine was Capote and the Swans on FX (Hulu.) It’s rather depressing.
Carol uploaded our podcast to Zoom. Here’s how to watch. If it asks for a passcode, copy and paste: Q80g43?f.
