On this week’s episode, for some reason Carol and I seemed crazy about green beans. We also talked about a favorite flower (salvia), what we are growing in our fall vegetable gardens, some dirt (quite literally), and watch out for green children!
See the 'Red Rocket’ crapemyrtles above? They’re my favorite thing this week so I posted about them on Instagram if you want to watch. Carol’s Doubleshot Orange Bi-Color snapdragons, AAS winners, are her favorites, below.
Our flowers this week were salvias because we’ve been watching Jimi Blake’s salvia video series at Hunting Brook Gardens. Special shoutout to Sharri who alerted us to his work!
The videos made us want to grow the Salgoon series of salvia from Hilverda Florist, and ‘Love &Wishes’ salvia. Carol is fond of Skyscraper Pink salvia from Selecta, and I posted all about my year of the salvia earlier this spring.
Our veggie topic was what we’re planting in our fall kitchen gardens. I’m planning on a few things including Umami Asian Blend Microgreen Seeds from Botanical Interests. Will you plant a fall vegetable garden this year? Carol almost always does.
On our bookshelf we discussed A Year in the Edible Garden, by Sarah Raven. (Amazon link.)
Our dirt was about Korean Natural Farming which is, of course, all about improving your soil. It involves recipes, and I’m probably too lazy to make them.
My rabbit hole involved buying more beans because I watched the bean, tomato and beef episodes of From the Source with Katie Button. I have a pot of beautiful black heirloom beans on the stove from Rancho Gordo which they call Chiapas black beans because they don’t really have an actual name for them. They smell so good. I’ll eat them for lunch and then make them part of my recipes all week. Did you know if you freeze one cup bean portions in your freezer you’ll never need canned beans again?
Carol went down a more extensive rabbit hole concerning The Green Children of Woolpit!Â
That’s all for this week. We’d like to hear if you’re planning to garden this fall, and if so, what are you growing in your vegetable gardens? Inquiring minds want to know. Have a great week!
