Gardening talk all over the place? You bet! On this week’s episode, we talked about orchids, cold frames, leaves, and regenerative farming, plus a new book about ground covers.
Tell me, where else can you listen to two avid gardeners talk about such a variety of topics, with a bit of laughter thrown in for fun?
And speaking of fun, I cannot believe we talked about Phalaenopsis orchids and I didn’t mention my Lego Phalaenopsis orchid! Oh well, that’s the way it goes with podcasts. Once you say it, you’ve said it, or not said it, and you go with it.
And we’ve been going with it for four years!
That’s right, this week’s episode is the first episode of our fifth year of podcasting. For the last four years, we’ve recorded and published a new episode every week. We have no idea how we’ve done it, but we still enjoy doing it and have no plans to stop anytime soon.
But that’s enough about us! Let’s go over what’s in this week’s episode because it really is gardening talk all over the place.
We talked about orchids and found this info on Phalaenopsis care from University of Maryland Extension which you may find helpful. And we mentioned Marianne Willburn's blog post on Garden Rant about fake orchids at Costco. (Which look really real!)
Then we talked about cold frames. Check out Dee's info on What Is a Cold Frame Greenhouse? | The Family Handyman and her blog post: My tropical plants are all tucked into the greenhouse - Red Dirt Ramblings® for lots of good info.
On the Bookshelf we have a new book, The Complete Book of Ground Covers, by Gary Lewis. (Amazon link). This is an amazing book. I’m going to have it out all winter absorbing all it has to offer.
For our dirt, I found out about a new project to geomap old nurseries in Great Britain and Dee brought up the perennial topic: What to do with all those leaves in the fall? Here are two related links: Why experts say you shouldn't bag your leaves this fall: NPR and Leave the Leaves: Winter Habitat Protection | Xerces Society
My rabbit hole was going to be another Lost Lady of Garden Writing but Dee pulled me down into another rabbit hole she found about regenerative agriculture (which we recognize can be a controversial topic). Dee started out with info about Will Harris, 4th generation Georgia rancher and farmer which lead her to Allan Savory’s Ted Talk. It all reminded us of James Rebanks. Remember him? We read his book, Pastoral Song: A Farmer’s Journey, a while back.
If you want to tour White Oak Pastures, Will Harris’s family farm, here’s a link to the first of five videos. Warning, you are on the edge of a rabbit hole but click on that video link anyway.
And that was gardening talk all over the place, our first episode of season five!

Hi am in north Texas south of Gainesville. Thought you might want to know where I was gardening. I’ll leave you alone now!
BTW, I have been digging a hole for an hour to put down a plastic swimming pool to plant my obedient plant in so I can see if it will prevent it from spreading and taking over my garden. I am beat but your email has sustained me. Onto the next task! More than likely the plastic swimming pool would just get hard and break up. Lol!
