In this week’s episode, we expounded on growing pollinator-friendly plants from seeds, edimentals, a new book on layering the veggie garden, and so much more.
Carol’s favorite thing is her crocus lawn. Can you see why? Her blog post about her crocus lawn was written by garden fairies. My favorite this week was my lone Iris reticulata in my front border.
I’m super busy with garden coaching so if you need a little help, email me soon to get on my schedule. I need a clone.
On our flower topic, we debated pollinator-friendly plants you can grow from seed. Here’s an email from Select Seeds on the topic. Some are easier to grow from seed than others. I’m talking to you, native milkweed.
For our veggie topic, why not try growing some "edimentals,” as described by Homes & Gardens? Have you heard of edimentals before?
The book on this week’s bookshelf is also about edimentals and other things. It’s The Layered Edible Garden: A Beginner's Guide to Creating a Productive Food Garden Layer by Layer by Christina Chung of Fluent Garden (Amazon Link.)
Her Instagram page is Fluent.Garden.
Our dirt was a little sad. The Monarch butterfly news from Monarch Watch is a bit bleak coming out of winter. All is not lost. Plant milkweed! Here’s a post I wrote about Monarchs and milkweed from last year.
Also, we discussed how Baker Creek decided to discontinue selling their purple tomato. If you want to read more, it’s currently on their FAQ page.
My rabbit hole was a deep dive on Juniperus virginiana. Eastern Redcedars wreak havoc for allergy sufferers in Oklahoma, and I’m one of the victims. When you consider that they are extremely flammable and also drink tons of groundwater, Oklahomans need to rid ourselves of them.
Carol’s rabbit hole was researching for her Substack article about C. Z. Guest and the Swans of 5th Avenue because we both enjoyed The Swans of Fifth Avenue, by Melanie Benjamin (Amazon Link.) We haven’t read Capote's Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal and a Swan Song for an Era by Lawrence Leamer (Amazon Link,) and we probably won’t. I’m about done with the Swans and Capote after the latest episode of the show.
Carol had a solar eclipse update. You can take a special flight from Austin to Detroit in total darkness in the middle of the day as it follows the path of the eclipse. Thanks to listener Lin for the tip!
I had a cranky moment so here’s my Instagram rant reel about spring garden clean-up and stupid memes on the internet. Below is Carol’s meme response.
