Once again, we overcame the odds and obstacles and recorded yet another podcast episode. On this week’s installment, we chatted about persistent perennials, growing carrots, and a book about Japanese culture.
We discussed armadillos again because Dee is “discovering” so much about them. Not by choice, but by necessity! You’ll have to listen to hear why. Or you may want to skip that part. Dee wishes she could! Your choice!
For our flower and veggie topics—persistent perennials and growing carrots—I have no links to offer.
Oh, wait. I do have links!
Check out Dee’s post on Year of the Salvia!
Or my post (from 2008) when I tried to say goodbye to ‘Stella D’Oro’ daylilies.
For carrots, how about a link to True Leaf Market’s carrot seeds? (They also have great info on growing carrots on their website. If you decide to buy some carrot seeds from them, go down and hit the affiliate link below, then search for “carrot.” It helps us pay for podcast hosting.)
Or, here’s a link to a post about one of my inventions that helped me keep track of a row of slow-germinating parsnip seeds. It would work for carrot seeds, too!
I could link on and on because Dee and I both have a lot of old posts on our websites, but I’ll stop with the above. If you have some favorite persistent perennials or some tips on growing carrots, leave a comment and share them with us.
On the bookshelf, we discussed A Little Book of Japanese Contentments: Ikigai, Forest Bathing, Wabi-savi, and More, by Erin Niimi Longhurst (Amazon Link). If you are looking for quiet rituals or ideas for more mindful living, we think you would enjoy this book. It would also make a great gift for a friend.
For our dirt, Dee found an article about people in Florida getting leprosy from Armadillos.
Down in the rabbit holes, I talked about my latest Lost Lady of Garden Writing, Irma Wilde, and I went through a litany of books I’ve been reading and listening to. I won’t list them all here, except for one, Sipsworth, by Simon Van Booy (Amazon Link), which I thought was charming.
Then Dee brought up the Duchess of Devonshire again. Remember when we talked about her and her gardens a couple of summers ago? Well, Dee has been reading Ask Not: The Kennedys and the Women They Destroyed, by Maureen Callahan (Amazon Link) and Debo, as the Duchess was called, was mentioned as a friend of some of those Kennedy women.
Finally, if you want to hear me on the radio with Doug Oster over there in Pittsburgh, here’s a link to that episode of his weekly gardening program, The Organic Gardening Radio Show on KDKA Radio.
And that’s all we have for you this week. We hope the hour you spend listening to us talk about gardening and other topics is a relaxing time for you. We appreciate each and every one of you and are thankful to have you as a listener.
