For this week’s episode, Dee and I talked about all the new coneflowers on the market, new vegetable varieties from Burpee that I’m growing, and a new book on gardening that we love. Betwixt and between, we covered a fair number of other topics.
We also let slip some of the behind the scenes shenanigans and magic which helps us come up with a new podcast episode every week, year in and year out. In fact, I almost called this episode “Bang, bang, bang, let’s organize this coneflower information.” For that alternative title to make any sense at all, you’ll have to listen to the episode.
Now, let’s go through some links that were not included in the official show notes and some that were.
Dee is still sowing seeds. This past week she sowed seeds for Sweet Sixteen cosmos, and three new varieties of zinnias: Benary’s Giant Coral, Oriole and Cupcakes Pink mix. She’s into coral as a color this year.
I edged my garden borders in back and wrote a blog post about what I learned from finally doing it.
About those coneflowers? So many links!
PowWow Wildberry

And if you want to see the new vegetables Burpee sent me to try in my garden, check out their PDF about new vegetable varieties for 2024. And please let me know what you think of when someone says you can eat pumpkin “fresh or canned.”
On the bookshelf, we were both delighted to receive review copies of The 30-Minute Gardener, Cultivate Beauty and Joy by Gardening Every Day, by Greg Loades. (Amazon Link). Greg also wrote The Modern Cottage Garden: A Fresh Approach to a Classic Style” (Amazon link) which we reviewed a few years ago.
For our dirt, we went back to Instagram to highlight two accounts we found interesting and inspiring: Rosie Grant (@ghostly.archive) and Troy Drake (@troymadeit)
I’d like to pause at this point and congratulate Dee on her Instagram account which reached 10,000 followers last week. Listeners, that is not easy to do, but she puts out a lot of great information, is genuine in her approach, and inspires many gardeners both in Oklahoma and accross the United States. Congratulations, Dee!
We wrapped up this episode with a quick dive into our rabbit holes. Mine was the next Lost Lady of Garden Writing, Viola Brainerd Baird. Read the post to see why I saved her up for Father’s Day. Plus, Dee sent me down another rabbit hole and she didn’t even know it!
And with that, we want to thank everyone who listens, donates, or otherwise encourages us every week to be the best gardeners, and podcasters, we can be! Thank you!

My 3.5 year old grandchild is currently obsessed with burping and thinks burps are hilarious. So I told her that there is a seed company called BURPee and that probably made it worse for the parents ha ha.
