I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream For Good Soil
Season 5, Episode 41, August 23, 2023
On this week’s episode, we discussed ice cream, soil, mulches, compost, a new book on composting, and more. Whew, we were busy in spite of the heat!
You’ll have to listen to see how ice cream fits in with gardening. I promise it does.
Alec’s ice cream is the finest ice cream I’ve ever eaten.
Carol was frustrated by her potato harvest, and the garden fairies wrote about it. I’m just going to say how hot it is here. 105° several days in a row, but we hope for better temperatures next week. I also shopped for a few native plants at Native Plants OKC. Monarch aficionados, they still have milkweed that is neonic-free. I also ordered bulbs from Old House Gardens.
In our flower topic, we talked a lot about soil, landscape fabric, and rubber mulch. It could be safely said that we like soil and hate the other two unless you’re using landscape fabric beneath paths. Listen for more details. If you want even more detailed information check out the Soil Society of America. In our discussion, we again talked about Brooklyn Bridge Park gardens, which are pretty wonderful. I’d love to visit.
More talk about soil happened in the vegetable segment. Really, everything in gardening comes down to water and soil and the gardener’s shadow.
This week’s bookshelf is The Compost Coach by Kate Flood (Amazon Link). Follow her on Instagram as "Compostable Kate." It is much more accessible than other compost books. She explains it all in such a warm and easygoing manner we were charmed.
