This is our 52nd episode of our sixth season! Can you believe it? In celebration, we’re giving away some extra issues of The Gardener magazine which is kind of an heirloom. If you’d like to enter, comment on this post.
In this week’s episode, we spoke about mums, celery, bananas, a new book on women in horticulture history, and several other related topics.
We again discussed chrysanthemums. Here are two articles Carol wrote. Are Mums Perennials and How to Care for Mums. I do love a good garden mum.
Our veggie was was how to grow celery. Carol may try again after reading “Success with Celery” by Louise Langsner in Kitchen Gardener Magazine February/March 2000. Writing this newsletter sent me down a small rabbit hole, and it appears Louise had a kitchen garden blog although it hasn’t been updated since 2016. She also liked to do handmade crafts, and her husband, Drew, was a well-known woodcarver. People are so interesting!
Heroines of Horticulture: A Celebration of Women Who Shaped North America’s Gardening Heritage by Stefan White (Amazon Link) is on our bookshelf this week. It is a very erudite and interesting book.
Our dirt was about bananas which I learned about from doing a walk with Tommy Rivs on iFit. Here’s more information about bananas. Here’s a hint: they’re not trees.
My rabbit hole before I started researching Louise was How to control grubs with milky spore disease. I need to reduce the number of armadillos in my yard next year.
Carol went down another rabbit hole about the poet Elizabeth-Ellen Long, and she is trying to make a connection to gardening. No luck so far, but stay tuned.
We also loved quotes from Donna Ashworth and Laura Jaworski.
And that’s all we have for you this week. We hope the hour you spend listening to us talk about gardening and other topics is a relaxing time for you. We appreciate each and every one of you and are thankful to have you as a listener.

Love your podcast. I especially liked last week's about growing carrots. The Christmas catus photo was beautiful.
I too, am a lover of orange flowers. I agreed with everything you had to say about them! I love combining orange, purple and chartruese. There is an orange combination for every season!
