On our latest episode, Carol and I discussed cutting gardens, southern heirloom vegetables, the woman who championed said vegetables, and more.
As for our garden updates, I posted on RDR about my seed-starting station, and I’m trying to keep Masha out of the plants. Carol shared about crocuses and eggshells on May Dreams. They’re super cute!!
For our flower topic, we were inspired by the nostalgia garden from National Garden Bureau. We then discussed cutting flower gardens because they’re fun. Procut Sunflower seeds are available at Eden Bros. If you’re interested in more info on cutting gardens, we suggest you look into Vegetables Love Flowers by Lisa Ziegler (Bookshop link). Carol also shared her information about getting peonies to bloom in July.
I was excited about our vegetable topic because we featured our friend and colleague, Ira Wallace, who was the topic in the New York Times gardening column last week.
They Call Her the Godmother of Southern Seeds for a Reason. It’s a gift link, so you can read it if you want. Ira is part of Southern Exposure Seed Exchange and has written several books. She is also much beloved by everyone in the garden community.
Carol also shared Grow Great Vegetables: Indiana, edited by Bevin Cohen (Amazon Link)
A gardening book for beginners was on our bookshelf this week. The Container Victory Garden: A Beginner’s Guide to Growing Your Own Groceries by Maggie Stuckey (Amazon Link) It has a little Victory Garden history backing solid container garden information for newbies. As always, we love Smart Pots for growing tomatoes and other vegetables in containers, and that’s my post from last spring.
If you listened, did you get that all of our quotes this week were from the presidents? It’s nearly President’s Day, after all. We also recommend All the Presidents' Gardens by Marta McDowell (Amazon Link) if you want to know more about the White House’s garden history.
My rabbit hole was the book, Seasons of Wonder by Bonnie Smith Whitehouse (Amazon link). Carol is still exploring cross-stitch and reading Ray Bradbury. I love Bradbury’s work, and here is an interview he did with the National Endowment for the Arts.
As for this week’s title? I am getting rid of my orange tree and all but two citrus trees. Carol can’t believe it! Listen to hear more.
