This week, Carol and I chatted about the new, fun caladiums, how we grow garlic, an older book of garden essays, cultural burning, and more.
We began with our usual garden updates. I cut a flower bouquet to bring inside because I didn’t want my cut flowers decimated by rain. Here it is!
Carol is very excited about her cucumbers. She harvested her first cucumber, ‘Quick Snack’, a Kitchen Minis selection, and then we talked about other varieties we are growing, including an All-America Selection cucumber variety.
After our favorites and updates, we highlighted caladiums for our flowers. We know caladiums are not flowers, but shade gardens need foliage plants to be interesting.
The Caladium of the Year is 'Lemon Blush' one of the Heart to Heart caladiums. I grew them once, and they are quite beautiful. I didn’t grow them this year though. I went with pink, red, and white in my front garden. These are my green, white, and pink caladiums. I love them.
Next, we revisited growing garlic because it’s time to order it if you want to grow it this fall. Johnny's Selected Seeds has a nice selection, or look below at one of our affiliates like True Leaf Market.
On our bookshelf, we talked about a book of garden essays from 2012 that felt like it was written much earlier. Of course, that was twelve years ago. Seems just like yesterday. Anyway, the book is The Roots of My Obsession: Thirty Great Gardeners Reveal Why They Garden, Edited by Thomas C. Cooper (Amazon link.)
I found our dirt on Cultural Burning. I found it fascinating. Maybe you will too.
