No Mention of Violas But Lots of Other Gardening Tips and Talk
Season 5, Episode 43, September 6, 2023
This week, we chatted about buying bulbs for fall planting, lessons we’ve learned from our vegetable gardens this year, and other diverse topics as we always do. That’s what happens when two friends get together to chat with all of you.
One of the things we talked about at the beginning of the episode was mulberry weed. We hate this newish weed, and it’s prolific. Don’t know what mulberry weed is? I’ll show you. See all those tiny seeds? Ugh.
I also mentioned my pastel zinnias from Milk and Honey Acreage. I said I’d share a photo. Here you go. Carol’s little zinnias are her favorites this week, and she wrote a blog post about them. My favorites this week were my fall veggie seedlings. They are growing well. It gives me hope after weeks of terribly hot weather.
One of our favorite quotes was illustrated by Katie Daisy on Instagram. We love her work.
For flowers this week, we shared about making plans and buying fall bulbs. I’ve already bought several tulips from Eden Bros. Don’t go over there unless you want to buy a lot of bulbs. Ask how I know this. We also love Van Engelen for wholesale bulb prices and Old House Gardens for heirloom flowers and bulbs. I’ll protect my tulip bulbs from voles who think tulips are candy by coating them in PlantSkydd. It has a funny name, but it works.
Our vegetable gardens taught us so much this year. Mine was all about soil. Carol’s taught her all about raccoons and tomatoes. She also had a great green bean year. There were other lessons learned, but it’s too lengthy to go into here.
On the bookshelf we had  Why We Garden by Claire Masset, published by Batsford, with illustrations by Claire Harrup (Amazon Link.) We enjoyed this book with so many amazing insights and quotes. A great gift for the gardener who has just fallen in love with the craft.
Carol found our dirt, which is the Loose Ends Project, on Instagram. What a wonderful volunteer organization.
I had a fascinating rabbit hole this week about Richard III. Check out the movie The Lost King, and the corresponding book Finding Richard III: The Official Account of Research by the Retrieval and Reburial Project.Â
As for the rest of this scintillating episode, you need to go listen. Till next time!
