On this week’s episode, we covered some diverse topics. As we sometimes do. We were serious for a bit, but had some fun, too. Of course!
For starters, we talked about a particular class of insecticides, known as neonicotinoids or neonics, and the unintentional consequences they can have in a garden. For more information, check out this article/fact sheet: Neonicotinoid info from Texas A&M.
But because we know such topics can be a bit heavy, we encourage you to visit the website of American Beauty Native Plants. They are committed to not using neonics.
In our vegetable garden topic, we turned back to fall and fall decor (even though it is decidedly Christmas-y in all the stores) and talked about growing gourds. For more information, you can check out the American Gourd Society website.
We both are enjoying our latest book, Of Flowers & a Village: An Entertainment for Flower Lovers, by Wilfrid Blunt (Amazon Link). It’s a book of fiction written as letters from a godfather to his goddaughter (uncle to his niece?) about life in an English village with an emphasis on flowers, of course. We’ve both had it in our libraries for quite some time and consider it a keeper.
Years ago (2007), after reading it, I wrote this blog post!
For our dirt, we talked about the recently updated Hardiness Zone Map. Both Dee and I are officially a half-zone warmer on the map, but listen to the podcast to find out what we think this means for our gardens and perhaps yours.
You’ll also have to listen to hear about the rabbit holes—no links for those this week—but if you want to make some pressed flower ornaments as Dee did (and I do!), here are a few affiliate links to the products she purchased.

And now, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, we are thankful for all of our listeners, wherever you are. May your turkey be moist, your green bean casserole be yummy, and may you enjoy your favorite slice of pie with a dollop of whipped cream on top, with your family and friends!
Happy Thanksgiving!
