Oh a bulbing we will go! On this week’s episode, Carol and I discussed indoor gardening, one of the things that gets us through the winter months while we wait for spring. We also talked about a new-to-us vegetable, microgreens, and a couple of other unique plants.
For my garden update, I went to the nursery and bought several things instead of planting my bulbs outdoors. I found a new plant, Green Galaxy monstera, which I’m super excited about. If you follow the link, I did not pay that high price for mine.
Carol and I have written exhaustively about this week’s flower group. I have a blog post or six on growing amaryllises and other bulbs, including an oldie goldie, forcing bulbs in vintage bowls and other containers. Carol also recently wrote about Christmas plants on Family Handyman. We encourage you to get out there and get your bulb on.
Carol is going to force snowdrops and lily of the valley in winter. I’m going to cheer her on.
For our vegetable, we decided to share ube with you. It’s a type of purple sweet potato grown in the Philippines. Ube is all the rage in the food world now. If you want to grow it next year, you can get small plants (slips) from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. Then, our ube discussion led us back into Mexican sour gherkins and Bitter Gourds.
On the Bookshelf is American Roots: Lessons and Inspiration from the Designers Reimaging Our Home Gardens by Teresa Woodard, Nick McCullough, and Alison McCullough. It is full of design inspiration from across the country.
Microgreens! The origins were our dirt this week. A charming video about how microgreens accidentally became a thing. I’m starting some Ciao Bella Basil Blend microgreens from Botanical Interests this week. (Affiliate link)
Carol also shared a sweet video by Sophia Blackall as well. You might remember we discussed her book, Farmhouse, recently. She has several books that would make fabulous Christmas gifts for the little ones in your life.
Rabbit Holes:
I went down a podcast rabbit hole by listening to the entire season of All There Is with Anderson Cooper on Apple Podcasts. It’s about grief, but it’s also life-affirming.
Carol received her Cicely Mary Barker flower fairy books and decided to investigate Barker’s life. She discovered some interesting things.
If you’ve made it this far, here’s our usual stuff. Thank you so much for reading and listening.
