Season 5, Episode 2!
We are getting in the holiday and winter spirit! On this week’s episode, we talked about Christmas/Thanksgiving cactus, growing herbs indoors, and walking in bad weather, with a brief mention of walking backwards and forest bathing, before we went down a couple of interesting rabbit holes.
Dee posted some pictures of her rabbit hole on Facebook and I borrowed one of them to show everyone. Isn’t that a gorgeous fall scene? She’ll tell you all about where she took that picture later in this episode.
While she was out driving around, I was busy doing garden clean up before my first significant snowfall of the season. I wrote about it on my blog, with a blog post channeling Star Trek (though I’m not a big fan of the series or the movies.)
But to be fair to Dee, all was not just car rides to see pretty leaves in her world. She also helped stack a couple of ricks of firewood. Ah, the joys of a wood-burning fireplace. If you have one, or have a gas one like I have, light a fire or turn it on, cozy up to it, and enjoy this episode!
Flowers? Let’s talk about those holiday cactus plants: Thanksgiving Cactus and Christmas Cactus. For a teaser, you can check out this link to a Family Handyman article I wrote about Christmas plants. I also wrote an article for them about Thanksgiving/Christmas Cacti but it hasn’t gone live yet. I’ll update this newsletter with a link when it does go live. It’s live now!
We might cringe if you actually listen to it, but here's an old, old episode we recorded...The Gardenangelists Episode 2 - Christmas Cactus, Where art thou? We hope we’ve gotten better at this podcasting thing but if you want to listen to our beginnings, be our guest.
Veggies? A listener requested we talk about growing herbs indoors. For more info, check out some articles on FH by Dee including: How To Grow Basil and How To Grow Rosemary | The Family Handyman
Then check out my FH article on growing microgreens. (Yes, those pictures are from my very own sunroom!)
Finally, if you want to go all in (get it… “in”) with indoor herbs, check out Herbal Houseplants, by Susan Betz.
If you are going to buy some seeds for herbs or microgreens, Botanical Interests has an article about growing herbs indoors. That’s an affiliate link and you can go shopping after reading the article and we’ll earn a small commission on anything you buy.
On the bookshelf this week is the children’s book, Farmhouse, by Sophie Blackall (Amazon link). A friend of Dee’s recommended it. We both love it. Watch and enjoy this YouTube video about what inspiried the author to write and illustrate this book.
Our dirt this week was an article: Bad weather is good for you: take a walk in the wind and rain.
Down in our rabbit holes, Dee talked about her trip on the Talimena Drive to see fall foliage. We’d love to know if you have a favorite drive to see fall foliage. Tell us in a comment.
I talked about my latest Lost Lady of Garden Writing, Lizzie Page Hillhouse. Do you know of any other women authors of old gardening books I should check out? Leave a comment for me if you do.
That’s it for this week. Until next week, here are the usual links…
