Good morning everyone! Days are growing shorter, but our podcast episodes are not. This week’s topics included refreshing your flower garden in the fall, vegetables you can still grow, a new book by Barbara Damrosch, amazing plants, and poisonous book covers.
Let’s start with our garden updates. Carol saw azure salvia while on a garden tour. She bought seeds from Hayefield Seeds. Here is native Salvia azurea in my garden. Listen to the podcast episode for more details. My update was I bought three peonies from Peony's Envy. I’ve been working hard in my garden removing smooth iron weed, a native plant I’m not enjoying at all. I use my Cobrahead weeder from Cobrahead Tools.
Let’s play favorites! Carol’s favorite plants this week are—you guessed it—pansies and violas. But, can you blame her? Mine was my purple fountain grass.
Our question of the week was how to make your garden thrive. Listen for the number one way on this week’s episode.
Our flower of the week was how to extend your garden’s beauty in the fall. First, splendor in the fall garden begins in spring. On the podcast, we discussed all of the fine things you can have in fall. Here are seven easy steps to a beautiful fall garden too.
In our vegetable topic, we expounded upon fall vegetable gardening. One of the best books on year-round gardening is The Year-Round Vegetable Gardener by Niki Jabbour. She is the queen of fall gardening and winter harvesting.
On our bookshelf this week is A Life in the Garden, Tales and Tips for Growing Food in Every Season, by Barbara Damrosch which also plays on fall and winter. (Amazon link.) I think we have a theme going here. If you’d like to read more, here is Eliot Coleman and Barbara Damrosch's website.
In our dirt, we think plants are amazing, and we hope you do too! The two amazing plants we profiled this week are Snow on the Prairie and Beautyberry Leaves. Go listen to hear more.
Carol’s rabbit hole was so interesting. It was about Arsenic and Old Gardening Books which could be a bit worrisome if you like to collect very old books.
That’s it for this week! We hope you’re well and enjoying the slightly better temperatures.
