On this week’s episode, we discussed Sunpatiens®, going organic in the vegetable garden, a new book on floriography, and more.
Have you ever met a snake in a place you least expected it? I did this week. Listen to find out how I got it to go outside. No, I didn’t kill it.
In other news, you’ll all be glad to know that Carol finally got rain, and she worked in the garden too. She also wrote a blog post on thinning seedlings, one of the hardest things for gardeners to do. I worked on my spicebush, cutting out all the deadwood from the fire. I’m a fearless pruner when I need to be! Then I went out of town and bought a new rose from Menards called ‘All the Rage.’ Mine is way prettier than their photo.
In our new segment called Playing Favorites, Carol said her favorite this week is one of her lavenders, pictured above. My favorites this week are my daylilies. Here is ‘Royal Invitation,’ a frilly one from Karol Emmerich.
We then discussed Sunpatiens, those stars of the sun garden, if you water them regularly. You can also grow them in shade and partial shade. Did you ever wonder about where Sunpatiens came from? Here’s an article about them by Katie Elzer-Peters in Green Profit magazine.
For our veggie topic, we debated the pain of transitioning from using chemicals to organic gardening, but we think it’s worth it. Our friend Doug Oster posted about his epiphany on pesticide use in his vegetable garden. It was excellent. Still, it takes some effort to change over to only organic practices, but you’ll have more birds and ladybugs, and butterflies. That’s for sure.
The book on our bookshelf this week was Flowers and Their Meanings: The Secret Language and History of Over 600 Blooms by Karen Azoulay (Amazon Link)
For our dirt, our friend Jim Charlier announced his new book on Harry Potter Herbology Magic. You can preorder it from Bookshop or Amazon Preorders
This past week, I went down a rabbit hole of SB Mowing on Youtube. There’s something soothing about watching those videos as he uses his edge trimmer, shovel, and blower to uncover an overgrown sidewalk. Carol likes them too!
We hope this is a soothing podcast episode for you to listen to this week!
