This week’s episode… what is there to say about it, except that I almost called it “an unhurried sense of time” because we do go on a bit as though we have all the time in the world, making this one of our longer episodes.
You’ll need an unhurried sense of time to listen to it!
But to help you prepare for our discussions about African Violets, a couple of seed catalogs, a new book of garden projects and a couple of other topics that came up in our rabbit holes, I’ve prepared a list of supplies for you to have on hand.
First, prepare a lovely cup of tea, a big cup of tea. Now, find a little doily to set the saucer on. (What? You were not even thinking about a mug, were you? This episode calls for a teacup and saucer!)
Next, look around for an African Violet amongst your houseplants. Oh, you don’t have one? Tsk, tsk. National Garden Bureau has proclaimed 2024 as the Year of the African Violet so you should have one. If not, go buy one! Then read Dee's blog post about African Violets she has grown and killed.
And don’t forget that the day this podcast episode goes live is National Houseplant Appreciation Day!
For your best listening experience, you should also grab your catalogs from Select Seeds and Johnny's Selected Seeds because our veggie topic for the next several episodes will be seed catalog reviews. (If you have a catalog you’d like us to review, leave a comment and we’ll see if we have it or want to order it.)
We offer apologies in advance for those of you who are listening without those catalogs at hand. You will not be able to turn to page such-and-such as we did, but the good news is these podcast episodes live forever, so if you do get the catalogs, you can listen again to see what we were talking about.
Now that you are ready with tea, catalogs, and an unhurried sense of time, I’ll continue with some information about the rest of the episode.
On our bookshelf, we have Verdura: Living a Garden Life: 30 Projecs to Nurture Your Passion for Plants & find your Bliss by Perla Sofia Curbelo-Santiago (Amazon link). (And we also now have some cool project ideas to work on!)
Down in our rabbit holes, Dee found some interesting information as she continues to update her diet, her surroundings, and her life with her new diagnosis of Alpha Gal syndrome. Her rabbit holes are bringing to light some great information we can all use to improve our diets. Check out the documentary on Netflix: You Are What You Eat, fresh seafood from Wild Alaskan Seafood, and the cookbook Vegan at Times, by Jessica Seinfeld.
If anyone has eaten at… oops, I think one dines at… Eleven Madison Park in New York City, let Dee know how it was. It’s now on her bucket list of places to visit and eat at.
Down in my rabbit hole, I’ve started off the new year by reading the January chapters of some of the month-by-month books I listed last year. It’s a nice way to start the day, to go back in time and place to see how January was for authors like Josephine Nuese and Jean Hersey, to name a few.
I also realized that a new book we got from Timber Press to review, What We Sow by Jennifer Jewell (Amazon Link), is also written month-by-month, so I’ve added it to my ever-growing list. Dee and I are both jumping in to read it, starting with the January chapter.
Alrighty then, I think that’s everything for this episode. If you need more information about anything we talked about or just want to say “hi,” you can do so in the comments!
