Carol and I had great fun on this week’s episode, which was about growing flowers and veggies from seed.
In our garden updates, Carol had a lot of rain that kept her out of the garden. I ordered some bean seeds and lettuce leaf basil from Seeds of Italy. The seeds got here so fast. I’ve already sown the basil seeds. I now have several varieties of basil. So fun!
Per usual, we played favorites. Carol was excited about—you guessed it— her pansies. She immortalized them in another pansy blog post. I hate to admit it, but because of Carol’s pansy fascination, I pay more attention to them than ever before. My favorite was my serviceberry tree, and I did an Instagram video about it.
In our throw and go section, Carol brought up the book, Sunflower Houses, by Sharon Lovejoy (Amazon Link, used copies.) Listen to the podcast for more details on those flowers we sow directly outside.
We both have seeds for 'Concert Bell' sunflowers, and 'Siam Gold' marigolds, both All-American Selections. I can’t wait to grow ‘Concert Bell.’
Then, we discussed throw and grow veggies. Bet you didn’t see that one coming! You’ll need to listen to hear about all the vegetables we sow directly outside. We then discussed how most beet seeds are glued together in threes, but Carol found single-seed beets from Johnny's Selected Seeds if you want to try them.
Our book this week is about design. It’s Outside In: Interiors Born From Nature, by Brian Paquette. Published by Gibbs Smith. (Amazon Link.) It has beautiful interiors that are mid-century modern. Not my style, but I can appreciate it.
Our dirt was Spotted Lanternfly Honey which sounds disgusting, but people are eating it. Is that like making lemonade out of lemons? Perhaps.
Carol had two rabbit holes. The first one was Culantro, but she couldn’t find any seeds. Here’s an article about culantro from Serious Eats. Listen to the episode for her second rabbit hole. I, alas, didn’t have one this week.
For our garden commissions, we discussed getting rid of my heath aster in the lower garden and my husband’s grandmother’s Asian honeysuckle both of which have run amuck. I also have loads of plants to transplant. Carol is going to transplant her winter-sown plants.
