On this week’s podcast episode, we talked about why we love violas and zinnias, how to grow fennel, a new fairy tale picture book, and “leaf-shape-changing” hollies, plus the usual rabbit holes and garden updates.
In other words, we had some fun getting together and chatting about gardening, recording it, and putting it out there so you can join in with us.
By the way, while we were recording, Dee noticed her husband going outside to check on a leak in their drip irrigation system. I cut out the part where she was texting him to say she’d get to it as soon as we were done, the part where I asked if we should pause recording, etc., but there might be a hint of the problem later in the episode. Just in case you were wondering!
Anyway…
Our first topic was what we are loving in our gardens right now.
For Dee, it’s the drupes on her blackhaw viburnum.
My favorite this week is some snowdrops that are blooming.
We don’t really have links for our flower topic, which is about why we love violas, pansies, violets, and zinnias. Instead, I’ll offer this link to The Quote Garden which is a website by quotation anthologist Terri A. Woodhull from Phoenix, Arizona. Via her website, she has helped us find many quotes.
For a vegetable topic, we chose fennel, or rather Dee chose fennel. Listen to find out why. Then, check out these fennel seeds from Botanical Interests. I discovered you can also grow fennel as a microgreen, so I might just do that.
On the bookshelf, we have a new fairy tale! The Cindervale Pearl by H.P. Jones is a new book, beautifully illustrated, that would be wonderful to read along with your older kids or grandkids, or just to read yourself. We would like to thank our friend, Kathy at Cold Climate Gardening and her son, the author, for sending us review copies.
We found some dirt about holly leaves, just in time for the holidays. Check out: Hollies Get Prickly for a Reason from National Geographic.
Down in those rabbit holes, Dee found another book about food: The Dorito Effect by Mark Schatzker (Amazon Link).
I found a documentary about Edna St. Vincent Millay on YouTube, maybe because I wrote about another poet, Elizabeth-Ellen Long, who I made a Lost Lady of Garden Writing.
And that is another episode! Let us know your favorite part or if you have ideas for topics you’d like us to cover in a future episode.
